Mercy Corps Preparing Humanitarian Response After 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes West Nepal

04 November 2023

Kathmandu, Nepal – Mercy Corps is deeply saddened by the devastating impact of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Nepal that struck Jajarkot and West Rukum, in the Karnali province, on November 3, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 150 lives and counting.

Mercy Corps and its partners are currently working to determine the full extent of the damage while simultaneously distributing emergency relief items, including tents, tarpaulins, and blankets, and preparing to deliver emergency cash assistance.

For the past five years, Mercy Corps has been working in the Karnali province to help communities better prepare to withstand and recover from disasters like earthquakes and flooding.

Harpinder Collacott, Mercy Corps’ Executive Director for Europe, is currently in Nepal visiting Mercy Corps' programs and is available for interviews. She says:

“This region faces an acute lack of access to medical facilities, further exacerbated by the challenging terrain that hinders the ability of first responders to comprehensively meet the pressing humanitarian needs.”
