Mercy Corps: United States Government Must Respect the Human Right to Seek Asylum

09 November 2018

Statement by Dr. Dafna H. Rand, Vice President for Policy and Research

In response to changes in federal regulations that could limit the right of migrants to seek asylum in the United States, Mercy Corps is issuing the following statement, attributable to Dr. Dafna H. Rand, Vice President for Policy and Research:

"Mercy Corps works around the world to protect vulnerable people fleeing war, famine and natural disasters. Mercy Corps opposes new Trump Administration measures that could limit the ability of at-risk individuals to seek asylum in the United States. While we do not typically comment on domestic U.S. policy issues, these measures undermine key principles that we aim to protect around the world.

"The right to seek asylum is firmly enshrined in U.S. and international law. Erecting new barriers to asylum would erode this fundamental right and weaken America’s commitment to the rule of law at home and abroad."
