The Data Protection and Privacy team (DPP) is releasing a series of guides designed to help Mercy Corps staff and partners better understand and implement responsible data practices. The guides combine existing Mercy Corps policies and guidance documents, simple tutorials, and links to other resources in a range of formats and languages.

We have created these guides as a response to requests from programme teams and partners for localised content, more detailed information, and practical examples. We envision the guides becoming a shared resource among Mercy Corps’ staff, partners, and our broader network of responsible data practitioners that will evolve over time as technology changes and as partners and communities add additional content based on their specific context.

The DPP guides offer:

  • Localisation: The guides are available in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Ukrainian. All content is being made publicly available under open license so that partners, communities, and peer organisations can share, modify, and contribute to the guides so they better reflect their local context.
  • Context: the guides bring together a variety of resources from Mercy Corps and partner organisations that can be used to implement responsible data practices in one place, along with some basic, concrete examples for things like encrypting a file or de-identifying data.
  • Multiple ways to engage: the content of the guides is presented in branded PDFs, shareable online content in Github - all of which are translated into a variety of languages - and a series of videos to accompany each guide.
